Plus Ultra moves to acquire Air Europa slots

Plus Ultra aspires to take over part of the business that Iberia and Air Europa are forced to release to obtain authorization from the Directorate General of Competition of the European Union (Plus Ultra, on the sale of Air Europa: “We will sit down with Iberia” ).

In statements to PreferentialJulio Martínez, president of Plus Ultra, acknowledges that “we are looking very closely at the integration of Air Europa into the IAG group.” “We have had conversations both with the European Union and with some important interveners in this process,” he reveals.

The manager confirms that any long-haul connection that Air Europa has to get rid of would fit into his company’s operations. “We are interested in any route in America,” he says (Iberia-Air Europa: the EU ruling will have to wait).

Asked about the possible expansion of the fleet to meet this increase in capacity, Martínez points out that “it is better not to get ahead of events since there is still a waiting time while Competition is pronounced.” However, he adds that “it is clear that, if the opportunity arises, we would have to provide ourselves with the means to cover them.”

In relation to the integration of Air Europa into Iberia, he considers that “this issue must be looked at from a global point of view, not merely a local one.” “It is important that Spanish companies can compete with foreign ones within a framework of developing highly efficient hubs that allow greater options for consumers. This is where other national companies (and not just Plus Ultra) can play an important role in the service of these routes,” he indicates.
