The CNMC demands that Aena raise its forecast for this year to almost 300 million travelers

Airlines estimated up to 315 million travelers in the airport network during the fare design process

Aena’s passenger traffic estimates for 2024 were excessively conservative during the design process of the rates that will come into force on March 1, with an increase of 4.09%. This is what the CNMC warns in a report published yesterday, in which it calls for an update of the forecast.

Aena put 280.4 million travelers on the table, which has already been surpassed in 2023 when a historical record of 283 million is reached. Against the vision of the public company, the airlines marked up to 315 million passengers in the Spanish airport network; Eurocontrol provided reports that supported 297 million, and the CNMC believes that there could be up to 307 million travelers. Finally, the regulator has relied on the 297 million from Eurocontrol to supervise the rates and urges Aena to make the aforementioned correction.

The debate on traffic for this year goes back months and is important because the rates that Aena charges airlines are based on the costs and investments made and the number of expected users. Already this January, the president of Aena, Maurici Lucena, publicly acknowledged that everything indicates that the 2023 record will have been surpassed on December 31.
