Simón Pedro Barceló will receive the 2023 Tourism Personality Award today

Simón Pedro Barceló, co-president of the Barceló Group, receives this Thursday, within the framework of the International Tourism Fair (Fitur), the Hosteltur Award for Tourism Personality of 2023. The jury has highlighted the strong boost it has given to the expansion of the company in its different business areas in said year. The award will be presented by the Secretary of State for TourismRosana Morillo, at 11:30 in the Hosteltur stand (10F28). Furthermore, the president of the Balearic Islands has confirmed her attendance, Marga Prohens, who will also participate in the delivery of the recognition.

The year 2023 “has been key in the expansion plan of Barceló Hotel Group”, according to the company, with the incorporation of more than 25 establishments, both in Spain and outside our borders.

Likewise, Ávoris Corporación Empresarial, the distribution division of the Barceló Group, has consolidated its merger with Globalia, which has become the largest group of travel agencies in the entire history of the sector in Spain. In addition, it won the competition to manage Imserso travel in the 2023-2024 season. For the first time since there was competition in this public concession, a single company won all three lots.


“There has been a full recovery in hotel activity, with record results, and a recovery already to 2019 levels in travel, which had been lagging far behind, with very negative results. We are going to close 2023 with a Positive EBITDA also in Ávorisvery small, but it represents a change of sign,” indicated Simón Pedro Barceló in an interview recently granted to Hosteltur.

He is the visible face of a company that will turn 100 years old in 2031 and that, at the peak of greatest activity in 2023, it reached 40,000 employees worldwide.

The tourism group ended last year with a turnover of around 5.7 billion euros, and with a net financial debt practically at zero, thanks to the record results in the hotels, with revenues 30% above 2022, already the recovery in the travel activity

The selection process

Simón Pedro Barceló is the seventh person to receive this award since Hosteltur created it in 2017. For the election of the Tourist Personality, the Editorial of Hosteltur Each year it presents five candidates for the award to the members of the jury and casts their vote, together with its editor, Manuel Molina.

The jury is completed with Jorge Marichalpresident of CEHAT (Spanish Confederation of Hotels and Tourist Accommodations); Carlos Garrido, president of CEAV (Spanish Confederation of Travel Agencies); Juan Molas, president of the Tourism Board, and Juan Cierco, president of the CEOE Tourism Commission.
