The occupancy of Barcelona hotels is in danger due to the drought

Catalonia has decreed a drought emergency, which will come into force this Friday, establishing restrictions never seen before in the metropolitan area of Barcelona and a large part of the province of Girona. It is planned to reduce tap pressure to save, cleaning urban spaces with drinking water will be prohibited, Hotel and campsite pools can only be filled with salt water and there will be no showers to clean your feet or remove salt on the beach, among other things. In statements to EFE, Jordi Clospresident of the Barcelona Hotels Guild, warned that these restrictions could cause a “significant drop in occupancy.”

The emergency phase decreed is the most serious of all and has three stages: In the first (the current one, with the Ter-Llobregat system below 100 cubic hectometers of reserves), the maximum water supplies are reduced to 200 liters per day and inhabitant for all uses (commercial, industrial, recreational or personal). In stages two (67 hm3) and three (33 hm3) they decrease to 180 and 160 liters, respectively, while other restrictions increase.

In total, there are 239 municipalities that are under scrutiny for controlling consumption below 200 liters, because those in Ter-Llobregat (202) are joined by those that were already in emergency due to the Riudecanyes (Tarragona) and Darnius Boadella reservoirs. (Girona), and the Fluvià Muga aquifer (Girona).

As a result of the drought emergency, The filling of hotel and camping pools can only be filled with salt water.. In emergency phase I and II there are exceptions for covered swimming pools registered in the census of sports equipment of the Generalitat and for outdoor swimming pools used throughout the year for federated sports practice if they have a water recirculation system, in the quantities essential to guarantee health quality. To save a volume of water equivalent to that used to fill the pool, in emergency phase II the showers will be closed.

Jordi Clos has told EFE that if hotels are forced to close swimming pools, they will register “a significant loss of occupancy”, since these facilities have become a “quite basic” complement in summer, and without them clients would go to other destinations. Faced with this, he added that if this happens “we will find ourselves with a situation of drought crisis and another of economic crisis.”

The measure establishes that the pools can be filled with seawater, but the hotelier has explained that it is complicated. Although it cannot be estimated how many establishments will have to close the pool due to lack of water next summer, Clos has described it as “unsupportive” that some swamps throw a large number of cubic meters of water into the sea while “we are here with restrictions.” .

“All this would have to be resolved,” he pointed out, while ensuring that “politicians would have to think that the desalination plants that they had planned to build since 2008 would have to be done” and that perhaps they should have foreseen this emergency situation. with more time.

On the other hand, he recalled that the Barcelona Hotels Guild presented a report last year in which it was pointed out that City establishments have reduced water consumption by 40% in the last seven yearsand that on average 163.5 liters of water are consumed per day per client, below the 200 liters decreed as maximum consumption.

Clos has also assured that hotels have improved their water management with measures such as adapting facilities for gray water recycling; by installing water-saving faucet, shower and toilet systems, daily monitoring systems for energy and water consumption or swimming pools with water recirculation systems.

Likewise, he highlighted that in recent years 30% of bathtubs in establishments have been eliminated and replaced by showers, which means more efficient consumption.
