Cruise companies did not dare to take tourists along the Red Sea past the Houthis

There have been publications in the media about the cancellation of some cruises departing from UAE ports due to the increasing frequency of attacks by Yemen’s Houthis on civilian ships in the Red Sea.

In particular, the Emirati publication Thenationalnews reports the cancellation of a 19-day trip on one of the Costa Cruises ships to Italy, which was supposed to begin on March 9. Aida, part of the same Carnival holding, will not take tourists from Dubai to Hamburg on March 20, as well as from Abu Dhabi to Mallorca in April.

Previously, MSC Cruises abandoned the 21-day itinerary on MSC Opera from Dubai to Genoa, Italy, and the 23-day MSC Virtuosa sailing to the English port of Southampton.

All these liners were supposed to head to Europe along the shortest route, which passes just past the shores of Yemen to the Red Sea and further through the Suez Canal. Such cruises are carried out after the end of the season in the Persian Gulf in order to move the ships to the Mediterranean waters that are more relevant in summer. According to usual practice, the company sold cabins on them, but due to the aggravation of the situation, plans had to be changed. The liners will leave Dubai empty and go to Europe via a circuitous route around Africa. Passengers will be provided with alternative options.

“The safety of passengers and crew is our number one priority. With no viable alternative route available, the company was unfortunately forced to cancel the sailings,” MSC Cruises said in a statement.

Since Dubai is now the most popular cruise port for Russians, the editors of TourDom.ru requested a comment from the official representative of MSC, tour operator PAC Group.

The head of the cruise department, Mikhail Feldman, recalled that the changes apply only to the Red Sea, where MSC discontinued regular cruises in October last year. In January, the company canceled spring grand voyages and some adjacent routes for the spring, when ships return from the Persian Gulf and South Africa to the Mediterranean.

As for cruises on the Persian Gulf, which are in demand among Russian citizens, they are carried out on schedule.
