Google Maps renames infamous bar in Sri Lanka

The scandalous “whites only” party in Sri Lanka, which provoked an international scandal, was continued on Google maps. The Sarayka Lounge bar, located in the city of Unawatuna in the south of the country, is easily recognized by the comment that complements the name Sarayka Lounge – aka no-native Lounge, that is, “not for locals.” Let us remind you that on February 23, in the account of an establishment popular with immigrants from Russia, an announcement appeared about a party with white face control, that is, only for whites. The entrance fee was 3000 rupees – not that expensive (about 900 rubles).

Local residents were outraged by the party. The event was urgently cancelled, the owners apologized on the establishment’s account and reported that they had severed relations with the organizers. The Russian diplomatic mission also had to intervene in the scandal. The embassy condemned racism and called for respect for the laws and customs of Sri Lanka.

The scandal will probably not affect Russian tourists, as well as relocants and winterers. Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickramasinghe yesterday, February 25, denied previously circulated information that the authorities will not extend tourist visas for citizens of Russia and Ukraine, and travelers who settled in Ceylon since the year before will have to leave the country within 14 days. For Russians, until March 31, the fee for ETA (electronic entry permit) has been waived. In mid-February, the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) proposed extending the incentive for another 30 days.

Earlier, the Russian Ambassador to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, Levan Dzhagaryan, stated that in 2024, 200 thousand tourists from Russia are expected in Sri Lanka.
