Russian man was arrested for overstaying his visa in Thailand

In Patong, one of the resort areas of Phuket, a Russian tourist was arrested on February 16 because of an expired visa. The 35-year-old man was detained at the door of his room at the Three Plus One Hotel in Patong. He was taken to the police station, where he will await trial, reports The Phuket news. Personal details, visa type and length of stay are not disclosed.

Such situations in Thailand cannot be called rare – not all tourists comply with legal requirements, and the authorities from time to time arrange document checks. Sometimes violators stay in Thailand for years.

A similar story happened to a Russian tourist in March last year. A man was arrested on the Thai island of Koh Phangan with his visa overdue by 993 days. He was also taken to the police station, where he was charged with illegal stay in Thailand.

The country’s policy is strict regarding foreigners with expired visas. In 2016, the Good guys in, Bad guys out system was introduced in Thailand. According to it, for exceeding the legal period of stay in the country, a fine of 500 baht per day is provided for tourists as a punishment (about 1,280 rubles at the current exchange rate – Ed.). In addition, deportation or even blacklisting for up to 10 years is possible, depending on the severity of the violation.

For example, if a tourist is arrested for exceeding the period of stay by up to a year, he will be deported and prohibited from re-entering for 5 years. And if an irresponsible traveler overstays his visa for a year or more, he will be expelled from the country for 10 years.

If foreigners voluntarily “surrender” to law enforcement agencies and admit to the offense, they will not be able to return to Thailand for a year.

It is also surprising that even those tourists who cannot leave the country against their will are threatened with a blacklist. For example, if a Russian’s passport is being reissued, he may not receive it for quite a long time. The queue to register at the Russian Embassy in Thailand is quite long.
