Saudi Arabia is working on launching direct flights to Russia

Saudi Arabia plans to attract more Russian tourists. For this purpose, a delegation of hoteliers and representatives of host companies came to Moscow – they discussed the possibilities of cooperation with Russian tour operators and travel agents on June 6 during a workshop organized by the Saudi Tourism Authority at the Moscow Hotel in the capital. A TourDom.ru correspondent found out what they want to interest Russians and when to expect direct flights.

In recent years, tourism in Saudi Arabia has been developing rapidly – large projects are being implemented, in which the state plans to invest about $800 billion. To attract foreigners, the country is building resorts on the Red Sea, where the first hotels of luxury brands have already opened. They are also developing a network of air routes.

“We have serious ambitions. We want to become one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. Saudi Arabia has many advantages. This is the long coastline of the Red Sea, a variety of natural areas, including not only the desert, but also green mountain landscapes in the south and north, cultural heritage, many festivals and events, and a favorable geographical location in the center of the world. 70% of the world’s population can fly to Saudi Arabia in 6 hours,” Hazim Alhazmi, president of the Saudi Arabian Tourism Authority, responsible for the American and European markets, told reporters.

He called Russia one of the priority areas. Last year, Saudi Arabia received 100 thousand Russians, and from January to April 2024 – already 57 thousand, an increase of more than 20%. According to Hazim Alhazmi, this has been achieved without any effort to attract Russians, but that will soon change. Saudi Arabia plans to actively promote its opportunities in Russia and launch an advertising campaign for tourists.

A TourDom.ru correspondent asked Hazim Alhazmi when direct flights will appear between our countries, since the Russian market has been declared among the most attractive. According to him, organizing air traffic is among the priorities: “Saudi Arabia is working on this. Airlines are ready. It’s about speeding up the formalities and I’m sure we’ll hear good news soon.” In the meantime, there are many options for getting there and connecting.

Specialists from Russian tour operators and travel agencies who attended the workshop are pleased: Saudi Arabia is holding it for the first time, so the opportunity to communicate directly with foreign colleagues is very valuable. “It’s noteworthy that mostly representatives of host companies came, but I would like to see more hoteliers. We need to understand what product to offer to clients,” the head of one of the tour operator companies shared his wishes with TourDom.ru.

The fact that hoteliers were in great demand was visible to the naked eye – travel agents, for example, constantly sat down at the Rixos Obnur Jeddah desk. This is the first project of a Turkish brand in Saudi Arabia, which will open on the Red Sea coast (there are three planned in total. – Red.). As commercial director Khalid Al Zahrani explained to us, the concept is similar to that used in other countries – it will be a family resort hotel with swimming pools, villas and a children’s club. There is only one peculiarity – “all inclusive” is provided in a non-alcoholic format, since prohibition is in force in Saudi Arabia.

We previously wrote that at the Arabian Travel Market exhibition in Dubai, rumors about upcoming easing in the neighboring country were discussed. The reason for them was the opening of the first alcohol store in Saudi Arabia, so far intended only for diplomats.
