The airline will return free tea and coffee on board

German airline Lufthansa will return free hot drinks to the menu on short- and medium-haul flights for economy class passengers. This was reported by aerotelegraph.com with reference to an interview that the airline’s CEO Jens Ritter gave the other day.

They didn’t charge for tea and coffee until 2021, and then Lufthansa decided to sell them for 3–3.5 euros. Perhaps this was a forced decision, because during the COVID-19 pandemic, air travel volumes fell sharply, and airlines had to save every cent to reduce costs. Now the market, including in Europe, has almost recovered to pre-pandemic levels, and there are more financial opportunities to improve service.

Aviation experts note that Lufthansa has always positioned itself as a premium carrier; low-cost elements, such as food and drinks for an extra charge, are unlikely to fit its business model. Moreover, the Lufthansa group also includes airlines specializing in low-cost flights, such as Eurowings. Distancing yourself from them is a logical step, otherwise it is difficult to justify the higher cost of tickets of the flag carrier. In addition, air travel prices are rising around the world, and passengers paying hefty prices expect better service for their money.

On transcontinental routes, European airlines have to compete fiercely with Middle Eastern and, more recently, Chinese carriers. Those who are not keen on low-cost elements on board, many offer high-quality food and alcohol at equal, and often more favorable, air ticket prices than European competitors.

We previously wrote that Aeroflot limited in-flight catering on flights from Moscow to Seychelles. Catering at Mahe airport, due to anti-Russian sanctions, refuses to cooperate with the national authorities; food and drinks have to be taken on board based on both legs of the route – there and back.
