The court reduced the amount of compensation to relatives of tourists who died while climbing Klyuchevskaya Sopka

Today the verdict came into force against the director of the Novosibirsk travel agency “Extreme Time”, which organized an ascent to Klyuchevskaya Sopka in 2022, which ended in tragedy – 9 people died. Last November, Andrei Stepanov received 4 years in a general regime colony – he was convicted under Part 3 of Art. 238 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation “Provision of services that do not meet safety requirements, resulting in the death of several persons.” In addition, he is prohibited from engaging in tour operator and travel agency activities for 3 years and is obliged to pay compensation from 500 thousand to 2 million rubles. relatives of the dead tourists.

In the appeal, which the Kamchatka Regional Court considered the day before, the lawyers asked the court to reduce the term of imprisonment and the amount of civil claims. “The defense drew attention to the fact that two tourists who survived the ascent also opposed real imprisonment. In addition, the lawyer submitted to the court dozens of petitions for leniency towards the former head of the company,” the court’s press service reported, adding that they were sent by the mother, ex-wife, relatives, acquaintances, as well as tourists who traveled with the convict’s company in previous years.

However, the court left the sentence unchanged – Andrei Stepanov will have to spend about 3 more years in prison. Only the amount of compensation for civil claims has decreased, although the remaining amount is impressive – in total, Andrei Stepanov will have to pay 17.5 million rubles.

Another defendant in the high-profile case is the surviving guide-instructor Ivan Alabugin. His trial is scheduled to take place in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky in the near future. At the same time, unlike Andrei Stepanov, Alabugin did not admit his guilt.

Among other things, the guide is accused of lacking qualifications to guide tourists along a route of increased difficulty. However, there is a nuance here: there is still no punishment for instructor guides for lack of certification. At the same time, as TourDom.ru recently wrote, it is not a fact that it will be introduced this year. According to experts, a register of instructors has not yet been formed and there are no general requirements for their certification.
