Hidden between mountains, at an altitude of 1,517 meters, extends the curious Trnovačko lakea jewel of nature that attracts attention for its romantic shape: a heart. Specifically, we find it in the north of Montenegro, and it has become a popular destination for excursions in the area.

Closer to Spain we can also admire a lake with a similar shape. Known as Lac du Montagnon, it is located on the other side of the border with France, in the heart of the Pyrenees, and can be reached with a hiking route.

In general, Montenegro is full of landscapes marked by water, from its Mediterranean coast to the lakes and rivers that cross the country. In the case of Lake Trnovačko, it is a real treat for the eyes, a heart-shaped whim of nature.

The mass of water is located in the Durmitor National Park, a protected area next to the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina that is part of the Dinaric Alps. In addition, it is completely surrounded by mountains: Mount Maglić to the north and the Volujak mountain range to the south.

Lake Trnovačko presents 700 meters long and 400 meters wide, as well as an average depth of 9 meters; and its striking shape is nothing more than pure chance, the result of millions of years of erosion.

A hiking trail to the lake

During the winters, the waters of the lake remain completely frozen, while when the sun warms this area of ​​Montenegro, many people choose this enclave to take the odd excursion.
