Highly located family hotel in Porto-Vecchio.

In the heart of the Genoese city, a small establishment run by three sisters has been given a new lease of life. The huge roof terrace offers superb panoramic views of the bay and surrounding mountains.

About twenty kilometers separates Figari Airport, from where a large number of flights are received from “from the continent” from the historical center of Porto-Vecchio (Portiveciu, Corsica). Last summer, after four years of work, in the heart of the ramparts of the Genoese citadel, a small establishment with a beige granite facade reopened its doors: Hôtel Moderne. Three sisters from the island – Anais, Chloe and Marie-Lea Tubiana – are at the origins of the project. In the 1980s, their father, along with one of his friends, purchased a hotel built in the 1940s.

After some success, this place deserved a complete renovation. It now has fifteen rooms and a huge roof terrace with 360-degree views of the city and the bay of Porto-Vecchio. You can sit there to admire the panorama, read a book or have a drink. Two floors below, room 35 has a private terrace overlooking the bell tower of the baroque church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste and, in the distance to the right, the Mediterranean Sea.

In the room, as throughout the hotel, the trio preferred sobriety. The walls are white, the flooring is mineral and the space is optimized with custom oak furniture for storage. Two breakfast options: one with a fruit plate, the other with pastries and cakes. We take it on the terrace or in a small room on the ground floor, the bay window of which faces the pedestrian street.

At the flower and green shop A Nepita in the old town of Porto-Vecchio.

Nepita gets its name from an aromatic plant closely related to wild mint that grows in the Corsican bush. This amazing boutique is both a vegetable seller and a florist, with fruit and vegetable stands juxtaposed with bouquets of all colors and rustic floral arrangements. Teresa and Guillaume Angeli, a thirty-something couple who opened the place in early February, also offer delicious to-go fruit juice cocktails made to order.

2, Rue Napoleon, open every day. Fruit juice from 4 to 6.50 euros.

70 meters away: stock up on Corsican cuisine

At L'Orriu's grocery store.

Dozens of whole hams hang from the ceiling of L’Orriu, a staple Corsican delicatessen founded three generations ago by the Andreani family in an old granite-vaulted cellar. The shelves are full of goat and sheep cheese, black pork ham, terrines, bottles of myrtle wine and other canistrelli (typical dry biscuits of the island). This temple to local gastronomy also includes a wine cellar and cantina Where is it advisable to book?
