To the south of Asturias, near the province of León, is located the Somiedo Natural Park. A rugged landscape that ranges from 400 to 2,200 meters high in which the the lakes of Saliencia and del Valle and the teitosconstructions of plant material made by the vaqueiros de alzada, an ethnic group from Asturias with ancestral customs and dedicated to livestock farming that populated this area.

Saliencia Lakes Route

In this park in the southwest of Asturias you can take several routes, one of the most beautiful is the Saliencia Lakes Route. The official Asturias Tourism portal proposes a tour of 14.7 kilometers which is carried out in some 5.5 hours (round trip).

The difficulty is low, the code is PR15 and starts in Alto de la Farrapona, at 1,708 meters at a border point between Asturias and León, which we reach by car (it has a small parking lot). The route is signposted and the trail is visible although to obtain the detailed itinerary, you can consult the Asturias Tourism website. The best time to do it is in May and June.

The route of the Saliencia lakes will offer the walker some breathtaking views of the Saliencia Valley and a tour of numerous lakes such as Cavewith a curious color due to the discharges of the ancient mining exploitation neighboring or Valley Lake, the deepest in Asturias. On the other hand, the hiker will walk through the glacial valley of Saliencia, outlined by steep ridges and home to the golden eagle and the griffon vulture.
