Why Leon Guarat decided to only listen to his albums on vinyl or in concert with his piano at home

How architecture has existed in music and life leon galart (Barcelona, 26 years old), it’s no surprise that this musician and visual artist who lives between Barcelona and Los Angeles has launched a concert series Comfort: Home Tour to announce his album comfortable, where he performs only in houses where there is a piano. One of his aims is to connect music with space and visual art.

Guarat studied music according to the Suzuki Method from the age of 3 to 20. Influenced by Debussy and Chopin, he decided one day that he wanted to stop playing and start composing, and naturally he turned to other artists who influenced him, including Bon Iver, Nina Simone, and Carles Santos. I started collecting. Perhaps overwhelmed by the rigors of studying classical music, Leon Gualert began film at ESCAC, graduated from film school in Los Angeles, and was offered to remain as a professor two weeks after graduation.

We met at the legendary home of Beth Galli and Oriol Bohigas in Barcelona’s Plaza de Reial, a few hours before the concert scheduled there. In front of us are two pianos that look like siblings, surrounded by a large library and furniture by Miguel Mira and Mies van der Rohe. “Performing at Oriol Bohigas’ house is special because ten years ago I used it for my final degree project for a web series called Tempo Barcelona, which took us around important sites in the city such as the Historical Museum and the Sagrada Familia. ” Now, Oriol is gone (the architect passed away in 2021), but the intention to create a space dominated by art remains, where the instruments Beth plays, the piano and cello, remain. The tradition of concerts also already exists. It’s a prepared space and there’s an energy to share. ”

The UNO project, a musical journey through different musical styles (electronic, folk, orchestral, etc.) culminated in 2020, and Guarat believes: comfortable (The 16 songs, written in English, are grouped together under the same conceptual thread, with no cuts, and are connected through interludes and spatial changes.) Their debut album. “I did the opposite. I limited the album to his five elements: piano, voice, cello, and sound.” ambient Every song is contextualized within a space, so no song is played sterilely up front like on the radio. On the album, a song is played in a shed in the rain, for example. ”

Both the album and Leon Guarat’s concert create different gifts in 70 minutes. He plays only in houses where there is a piano. “Firstly, because previously concerts were held inside houses, a ritual that is not new. And secondly, because in Los Angeles there are traditions such as: home party“People aren’t sociable at bars, but they met their best friends at home.”

Guarato has already worked in Ricardo Bofill’s studio, Benedetta Tagliabue’s house, or in spaces designed by his father, the architect Vicente Guarato, who won the FAD Interior Design Award in 1992. of the shelter. ” The process is simple: Leon calls and asks to borrow the piano. If the answer is negative, we say goodbye, and if the answer is positive, there will be a concert. The entrance fee is approximately 11 euros. “This is a celebration of the piano and the universe. You get to know the place through the instruments, the sounds, the history. Because I discover the instrument at the same time as the public discovers it.”

The concert will tour the United States starting in April, visiting the homes of three architectural geniuses: Richard Neutra and Rudolf Michael Schindler in Los Angeles, and Frank Lloyd Wright in Arizona.

“I feel like there’s some kind of provocation,” he says, doubting his proposal. “But it’s not a cry, it’s a turn that brings you back into the space of change. For me, records (their albums are only released in this format), like books, are what the artist is proposing to you. It’s an invitation to dig deeper into the world and see what ideas, what feelings you can extract and use in your own life. Spotify pays almost nothing per play. Launched the day it happened comfortable “I sold two records and made more money than I made in the last four years distributing my music on Spotify.” I asked him if his mother and aunt had bought the record. . Guarat laughs and declares that’s not the case (although he is hardly sure). Each record has my handwritten notes and was designed by my grandmother. ”

Leon Guarat uses music to create the space of emotional safety that he needs, under which he feels protected. There will be other projects they can help me with, but for now this house provides me with the disarming power to let everyone sit where they want, how they want, and have a drink. You’re part of something. ”

Before we said goodbye, I told him that he had brought me a Casio organ for Christmas in 1984. That’s what I still have. It also has a music-based drum machine that I think is very similar to his vibe. So he asks if he can go home. . “How to play the organ?” Well, I also have my son’s xylophone. “Actually, I’m looking for organs, can you sell them to me?” Hey, if he comes to perform, I’ll give them to him. “You need rope and wood.” It’s plastic-only and battery-powered. “Then there’s nothing.”
